Hut!  The Myrtle Beach Story

In 1989,  I wanted to go to Myrtle Beach for March Break.  In the weeks leading up to March Break, Mrs Booth gave me a travel brochure for Ocean Park Resort  In 1989, my relatives took me to Niagara falls for two nights.

When I returned from school after March Break, Mrs Booth brought her photo album from her trip to Myrtle Beach,  there were tones of pictures including the tunnels.  When I saw the tunnel picture for the first time, I thought it was an alternate route to Niagara Falls.

In the late fall or early winter of 1989, My grandfather asked me where would I like to go for March Break, I said, Myrtle Beach.  He said OK.  I was so happy to take the trip.  I saw many bridges including the Burlington Skyway, the Peace Bridge, and other great bridges I never crossed.  I Passed through the East River Mountain and Big Walker Mountain Tunnels.

In Myrtle Beach, my grandfather took me to a railway track that is not too far from Intercoastel Waterway Drawbridge

My grandfather took a picture of me beside the Railway crossing gate.  I climbed onto an ACL locomotive while my grandfather shot the picture.

Hut The Lawn Chairs on the Blinking Red Lights

July 19, 2012, I saw on the bus a pair of patio chairs on the truss of the Blinking Red Lights.

Two patio chairs hang from the truss at the Hurst at Little Ave railway crossing.

I saw my first train at this railway crossing in 1985.  Crossed this level crossing frequently when I visited Newmarket

Crossed the The Cherry Street Strauss Trunnion Bascule Bridge for the first time in 1985 with my grandfather.  This was the first bridge I saw with railway gates.

The Rodd Avenue Railway Crossing.  Visited in March 1988

Regional Road 15 in Haltin Hills Railway crossing, Visited in October 1989

Water Street Railway Crossing, Newmarket, Ontario.  Visited frequently.  Mrs Booth took a picture of this level crosing in Winter, 1990

The Strachan Ave level crossing.  This crossing was replaced with a bridge in 2013.

October 1989

On this day, I had to take a day off school because I had the Chicken Pox.  My grandfather took me to a job site on Regional Road 15 in Halton Region. The gates were lowered and I thought a train was coming.  I sat there for a few minutes and than the gates were raised to let traffic through.  I think they were testing the gates.  After crossing the tracks I said Whee! as we descended the hill.

I was fascinated with trains, railway crossings, and the Blinking Red Lights.  I wanted a picture of the Blinking Red Lights so much, my teacher Mrs. Booth took a photograph of the Water Street level crossing.

Back in the 80's, many freight trains used these tracks.  Today Mainly, Go Transit trains run along this rail line.

A Christmas Hut! in 1990

In 1990, My grandfather gave me a Novelty Railroad Crossing Sign light.  This sign features gold letters on a black cross buck.  When I first initally saw this sign was in a small store in the Upper Canada Mall across from Zellers.  Another interesting item was a novelty Traffic Signal.  I was more intreigued with the railways and trains, my grandfather got me the Railroad Crossing light.  This light features a red and green light.  When you turn it on, after a minute or two the light show begins.  

The second gift I received for Christmas was a level crossing with working gates.  This is a unique level crossing because it was spring loaded.  When the model train adds weight to the crossing, the gates will drop and when the weight is released, the gates will spring up again.  That Christmas Day, I took the level crossing to my relative's place and it fell apart due to its fragility.

What Are the Blinking Red Lights?

The Blinking Red Lights are the warning signal at railway crossings and moving bridges.

 The Strachan Ave Railway Crossing (Replaced by bridge)

What Does Hut Mean?  

When I was young I was intrigued with the Blinking Red Lights at railway crossings because the lights flash alternating  and the tolling of the bell.

The Davis Drive Level Crossing in Newmarket, ON

This was the first level crossing that I crossed the most.  At this very crossing, I was introduced to what a train was.  In 1987 - 1988, the gates were installed and this was the first gated crossing I have watched trains at.

The Cherry Street Drawbridge

In 1986 - 1987, My grandfather drove me over this drawbridge.  I was intrigued by the noise you hear when you drive over it.  When the tires hit the grill, you will hear an audible sound.

A few years later, my grandfather told me that bridge was a lift bridge when I questioned about the railway signals.  The Blinking Red Lights will blink when the bridge has to be raised to let boat traffic through.

Level Crossing at Rodd Avenue, Pickering, ON

In March, 1988, I was Staying with Lorna and Dan in Pickering.  During the day I like to get out for a walk.  Jennifer and Charlotte took me to Petticoat Creek Conservation Area and than on to the Rouge River.  Every time I crossed these tracks a Train will come.  Sometimes I will hear the bells after entering the crossing and  than Jennifer will tell us to run.  Via and Go Trains use these tracks.  The crossing is still has its original wood planks..
