More Memories of being a Theatre Volunteer

More Memories of being a Theatre Volunteer

2010

In 2010,  the Downtown Community Theatre has closed for demolition and construction of the Mady Centre For the Performing Arts was underway.  Theatre By the Bay housed their productions of Taming of The Shrew and Aladdin and Jasmine's Summer Adventure in the Grand Theatre.

I continued my duties of handing out programs as audience members file into the theatre prior to the performances and sell rings at the kids show.

Great moments of 2010 included hugging Micheal Rawley, and a photo opportunity with a character from Taming of the Shrew.

2011

William Shakespeare Bobble Head

There was high hopes for the Mady Centre for the Performing Arts to be complete for Theatre By The Bay's 2011 season.  Robert Joy from CSI NY had the role of Prospero in The Tempest.  Due construction delays at the Mady,  Theatre By The Bay had to relocate The Tempest and Treasure Island, the Pirate Musical to the Georgian Theatre.  Treasure Island was remounted to celebrate the Theatre By the Bay's 10th anniversary.  I continued on with my duties of handing out the programs and selling the rings.

Evil Dead the Musical's Kristan Brunn returned to
play as Stephano in the Tempest
Memories of this season included meeting Robert Joy and hugging Micheal Rawley.

Hugging Micheal Rawley at The Tempest.
Whatever happened to the Peter Pan costume?  In June, 2011, I was informed that the Peter Pan costume will be given to me.  After searching the treasury, Peter Pan Costume has vanished into the Great Costume Void.

The Mady Centre for the Performing Arts was built and officially opened on September 10, 2011.

2012

The Mady Centre was finally built and Theatre By the Bay has a new home.  The 2012 season was the only season that had a theme, Great Stories well Told.  Theater By the Bay had three performances over the course of the summer.  I saw Man of La Mancha 8 times and wanted to see it a few more times and I could not get into the theatre due to sell outs.  The same cast also performed The Mary Wives of Windsor on altarnate days.

The Young Company performed Jacob Two Two Meets the Hooded Fang.

Hugging Micheal Rawley after watching Jacob Two Two
Memories of the 2012 season,  I got to hug Micheal Rawley several times throughout the rehearsal period and helped on the construction and the painting of a two storey set.  Great songs of this season included The Impossible Dream, Dulcinea, We're Only Thinking of Him, from Man of La Mancha.  Child Power from Jacob Two Two meets the Hooded Fang.  In one performance of Man of La Mancha,  Micheal Rawley approached me while singing We're Only Thinking of Him.  I did not know that he did that for me until after the performance.

Memories of being a volunteer at the Theatre

Great Memories of Being a Volunteer at The Theatre

2007

In 2007, I wanted to become involved with the local theatre after watching Evil Dead the Musical for the second time.  I got in touch with Theatre By the Bay, a professional theatre company in Barrie, Ontario.  My primary duty at the theatre was to hand out programs as people proceed into the theatre prior the the performance.  The first show I saw for free was Pump Boys and Dinettes.  On My first shift, I volunteered and watched Sleeping Beauty's Summer Adventure.  I watched both of theses performaces several times.

Memorable line from Sleeping Beauty's Summer Adventure, "Sleep Country Canada, Why buy a mattress anywhere else.  In this production, audience members were pulled from the audience to hold brief cases in a Deal or No Deal sketch.

2008

In July 2008, I was exposed to Shakespeare for the first time,  I greeted people and watched A Midsummer's Night Dream at Heritage Park.  In August, I continued my duties of handing out programs at performances of Glorious, The World's Worst Singer and Cinderella's Summer Adventure.  I got the duty of selling the rings at kid's performances.

This is a design I made with the rings

2009

Theatre By the Bay has finally had its first production inside the Barrie Downtown Community Theatre, 1 Dunlop Street West.  I was very excited because a former cast member from Evil Dead The Musical, Kristan Brunn Played the role of Malvolio in Twelfth Night. I got to spend plenty of time talking to him about my memories from Evil Dead the Musical.  I also met up with Micheal Rawley.

Music Is The Food of Life

I fell in love with Peter Pan and Tinkerbell's Summer Adventure Because it was the first time seeing Peter Pan in the theatre.  I got the duty of selling rings and halos before and after the performances.

A moment from Peter Pan and Tinkerbell's Summer Adventure,  The whole audience got to participate in the Chicken Dance.

After the performance closed,  I asked a friend at Theatre By the Bay about the Peter Pan costume because was a great costume to wear out.

The Tweet Seats

On May 25, 2012, During a conversation in the dressing room prior to the afternoon performance of the Marquis Crossing Ladies Society's First Attempt At Murder at the Mady Centre for the Performing Arts.  I have learned about a designated section of a theatre or cinema that permits people to use their cell phone during the performance or movie.

Why The Tweet Seats?

Tweet Birds

Nowadays, people want to stare at their small screens in order to keep in touch with friends via Stockbook (Facebook), or Twitter.  People want to share their reactions, thoughts about the performance or film that they are attending.

Where are the Tweet Seats?

The tweet seats should be on the topmost level or the back row of the auditorium.  If you are watching a show in the Mady Centre for the Performing Arts, the tweet seats are located either in the lobby or outside the building because Tweeting and Facebooking will be a visual distraction during all performances.

Why turn off your cell phone?

When you visit a theatre, you are encouraged to turn off and cell phone because its glow will create a visual distraction for audience members and actors.  The Ringing of the cell phone for each text message received will annoy both audience and actors.  Many people will shut their phone off.  Occasionaly, a cell phone will ring during the performance at a Theatre By the Bay performance because someone probally forgot to shut his or her phone off.

Let's listen to Pop Culture Critic, Lisha Hassanali give a lowdown on Tweet Seats on Here and Now Toronto at CBC.ca.

Great Links about Tweet Seats

CBC.ca, should theatres have dedicated smartphone sections

The LA Times, Theatres set aside Tweet Seats.

Macleans Magazine, Theates Embrace Tweet Seats

Let's Turn off our Cell Phones and Enjoy the Show

Audience members on their phones in a Tweet Seat Section, WSJ

Thank God that Theatre By the Bay will not be having any Tweet Seats at all three Productions.  When you enter the Mady Centre for the Performing Arts for between July 26 - Auguest 26, 2012 you will hear the following before the performance.

Welcome to Theatre by the Bay's Production of Man of La Macha, The Merry Wives of Windsor, or Jacob Two Two Meets the Hooded Fang.  Please turn off all cell phones, pagers, players, I Pods, I Pads, I Phones, I whatever you get my Drift.  Any forms of photography and the use of audio or video recording devices are prohibited.  enjoy the show!

If you are at the Mady Centre enjoying Man of La Mancha, you will have to wait until Intermission to make your Tweets, or Facebook comments about ths show.

The Theatre Ticket Rip Off

If you are looking for tickets to see your favorite Mirvish Show in the heart of Toronto, you should think twice before you click the Pay Button.

Let's Look at some ticket Prices

I will be comparing tickets for the Mirvish's production of War Horse at the Princess of Whales Theatre for the May 16, 2012, 7:30 PM Show

Ticket King

Orchetra Seating EE - O = $110 + 7.50 Service Fee = 117.50

Ticket King is the official site you should buy your tickets for all Mirvish Shows.

Toronto.theatre.com

I will look up a seat for the same show at Toronto.Theatre.com and see the price.

Orchestra Row N = 315.00 + 47.25 Service Fee + 15.00 Delivery Fee = 377.25

Toronto.Theatre.com is a website that will overcharge and make a lot of money off a seat that has a face value of $110 according to Ticket King.

There are some sites that may try to sell you the exact same seat at 50% off.  Do you think it's worth the savings?  Let's now look at the World Wide Wait of Google.ca for the best deals on War Horse Tickets.  The next site I will be viewing is Good Seat Tickets

Good Seat Tickets

Orchestra Row N was marked down from $360.00 to $288.00 with a fake discount.

Row N = 288.00 + 57.60 Service Fee + 15.00 Delivery Fee = 360.60.

Do you think it's worth ordering that War Horse Ticket?  Good Seat Tickets is 17 bucks cheaper than Toronto.Theatre.com price of 377.25.

Let's Continue searching the World Wide Maze for a better deal on the same same date and seat.

The Ticket Tennis Server

Orchestra Row N = 285.50 + 55.55 Service Fee + 15.00 Delivery Fee = 355.55

This is the cheapet Ticket third-party ticketing site found.  The mark-up is still quite a big deal and Let's continue to search the maze for a cheaper site.  Can we find a site that is cheaper than Ticket King?

The Ticket Centre

Orchestra Row N = 324.00 + 58.32 Service Fee + 15.00 Delivery Fee = 397.32.

This is the most expensive War Horse Ticket I have found online so far.  If you order from the Ticket Centre, you are paying in U.S funds

Outcome

The result was, there was no cheaper seats online for finding a ticket to see War Horse.  The best idea is to go to order through Ticket King (Mirvish.com).  All these other ticket markets are ticket re-sale sites that do not support the show you are watching.  If you buy a ticket from the Third Party, you are cheating Mirvish or Dancap.  Worst Case Scenario, you may not get into the show because the ticket or seat may not exist.

Fortunatly, you do not have to worry about the rip-off Artists when you buy a ticket to see Man of La Mancha, Jacob Two Two, or The Merry Wives of Windsor at the Mady Centre this summer.  These tickets are available at Barrie's Theatre page.

December 7, 2011 Viewing

On December 7, 2011, I scored a chance to see this wonderful show at the Old Town Hall Theatre because I know a few actors in the show.  Around Dusk, We were on the highway heading towards the city.  By 5:00 PM We arrived at the Town Hall Theatre and I got to meet a few new people and some old friends from Christmas Cafe', Aladdin, Music Music Music, etc.  At 7:15 PM the cast performed their favorite Warm-Up Songs like Mi Me Maw Mo Mu, and Number Song.  When you watch theatre, you will never get a chance to listne to warm-up songs unless you are in the show singing them yourself.  Another great warm-up song I love is Bella.  At 7:30, PM the show was underway.  Once the Curtain rose, it was time to take a Trip onboard the Space Shuttle to the Planet Z and Flarth to meet Flash Gordon and Snow White through song and dance.  Everyone will love to hear about a place where you drink brown stuff at a place called Hortons'.

The Mady Centre, Evening Gala

The Five Points Theatre

Grand Opening Gala

The Five Points Theatre Formerly known as the Mady Centre is now officially open for your upcoming productions, film screenings, recitals, and other events.

As the sun sets on opening day of the Barrie Downtown Community Theatre, everyone gathers outside for the unveiling of the name of the theatre.

Following the Unveiling of the theatre name,  everyone files into the new theatre for the Evening Gala.  The gala featured various acts from Song, Dance, and Stand-Up Comedy.  Scott A. Hurst recited the following passage from The Tempest.

"do look, my son, in a moved sort,
As if you were dismay'd: be cheerful, sir.
Our revels now are ended. These our actors,
As I foretold you, were all spirits and
Are melted into air, into thin air:
And, like the baseless fabric of this vision,
The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces,
The solemn temples, the great globe itself,
Ye all which it inherit, shall dissolve
And, like this insubstantial pageant faded,
Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff
As dreams are made on, and our little life
Is rounded with a sleep. Sir, I am vex'd;
Bear with my weakness; my, brain is troubled:
Be not disturb'd with my infirmity:
If you be pleased, retire into my cell
And there repose: a turn or two I'll walk,
To still my beating mind. (The Tempest Act 4 Scene 1)"

To wrap things up a short slide presentaion of the Surgery of the Mady Centre was shown to a live performance of the Seasons of Love from RENT.

Barrie Downtown Community Theatre, Grand Opening

The Five Points Theatre Grand Opening,

September 10, 2011

The Surgery is now complete and on the 10th Day of September, The Mady Centre for the Performing Arts will be opening.

Surgery Recap

In March, 2010, Barrie Council decided to demolish the Scotia Bank building and rebuild a new building instead of renovating.  In July, 2010, The Old Bank Theatre was ripped down and a big pit severed the ground until the basement was installed.  February, 2011, The structure started to emerge from the pit.  As the surgery continued into the spring of 2011, the outer walls were blueskinned, panelled and the decorative finish was installed.  By July, 2011, the steel fences came down and the sidewalks were opened and people can get a closer look at the new theatre.

The Grand Opening of the Mady Centre for Performing Arts (Downtown Community Theatre) Has arrived.

The Band Feedback played on the stage beside the Simcoe Hotel until the Ribbon Cutting at high Noon.

The Five Points intersection in Downtown Barrie was closed for the first time in history to celebrate the opening of the new Mady Centre for Performing Arts.

People gather outside the building, wanting to get their first peek of the new Downtown Community theatre

The Mayor and important people pose for a photo opportunity before the ribbon cutting.

At High Noon, Mayor Jeff Leiman cuts the ribbon and declares the Mady Centre for the Performing Arts open.

For the rest of the day, people were able to tour the theatre.

Hot Dogs were roasting on the BBQ

The community was treated to cake

There was music on the Outdoor Stage, the lower lobby and inside the theatre.

A great Rapper named LDS played a quick set before taking off to another gig in Toronto.

Don't Forget, the Yellow Jackets were having a buzzing good time with their share of the orange drink.
