The Harvest Festival, Work More Festival and the Old Pyramid

In the Month of Auguest and September, I spent time in Burks Falls helping build and take apart the Harvest Festival.  I love to call the weeks leading up to the Harvest Festival, the "Work More Festival."  During the Work More Festival, Irving Justin and David organize a bunch of jobs that have to be completed by the end of each week.  If the tasks are complete, that means one less task for the next week.

During each week, there are tonnes of Pop-Up projects and some Make-Work Projects.  A Make-Work Project is counter-productive and time consuming.  One of my favorite Make-Work Projects moving firewood, generators, etc multiple times.

The Old Pyramid

The Old Pyramid had a bunch of Make-Work Projects on itself.  Before the pyramid is ready to go up, the four triangles must me rotated to form a square.

Once all four sides are lined up exactly, 20 people must help raise one triangle up with the aid of a rope and push poles.  If a strong gust of wind picks up while the Triangle is being raised and control is lost, everyone must run towards the side of the Triangle because it's the quickest way out.  If you run out the tip of the Triangle, you will more likely get crushed.

People hold the Triangle as it's lowered into position and it's anchored with a support pole.

The First wall of the Old Pyramid is in position.  The other three triangles are ready to go up.

Everyone pushed with their might to raise the second Triangle of the Old Pyramid into place.

When the Triangle is in the vertical position, everyone must help lower the Triangle into position.

The second Triangle is about to be lowered onto the first Triangle of the Pyramid.

After the first two Triangles are in position, they are tied together with chicken wire.

The Third Triangle is lowered into position.

As the final Triangle of the Old Pyramid is about to be raised, almost half the crew retreats to the compound.  The final Triangle is more challenging because there's less people to manage the raising.

The Greatest challenge awaits once all four triangles are in position.  Here comes a Make-Work Project.

The Make-Work Project occurs if all four Triangles do not meet.  Everyone will have to grab the four sides of the structure and shift it until the tip of all four triangles meet.  Onces the Make-Work is finished, the four sides are chicked wired together, fabric stapled, and work site trash picked up.  When the Pyramid is up, the four support poles are removed and the structure will support itself.

The Old Pyramid is now standing.  These pictures were taken during the 2009 Work More Festival.

When the Old Pyramid is dismantled, the push poles are wedged into all four walls, the scaffolding is put up in order to snip the chicken wire.  When a wall is ready to be removed, everyone will grab and push the wall over.  The wall will glide down like a sail, step back when the wall is lowered because it may kick you in the shin.  Once all four Triangles are on the ground, the fabric is removed and bagged for the next season.

After the fabric was removed, the Triangles are moved and placed on skid platform on the tree line.

This was how the Old Pyramid was raised and lowered for every Harvest Festival until 2010.  In 2011, the Old Pyramid was retired and split into three smaller pyramids.
